Ottawa is policed by the Ottawa Police Service (OPS), which has operated Automatic Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) since 2016 and is rapidly expanding it — from 5 equipped patrol cars toward roughly 65, via a purchase of 37 Axon Fleet 3 in-car camera systems with integrated ALPR. The program is mobile: cameras mounted on patrol vehicles scan passing plates against Ministry of Transportation and OPS hotlists. panopti.ca found no evidence of a fixed or stationary ALPR camera network in Ottawa, but the mobile program's aggressive growth warrants close monitoring.
