Mobile ALPRs deployed
ALPR status
Hamilton is policed by the Hamilton Police Service (HPS), which operates a mobile Automatic Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) program. In 2023, funded by a provincial grant, HPS equipped 78 patrol vehicles with integrated windshield-mounted ALPR and in-car camera systems — a rollout that began May 1, 2023 and was completed that fall. The vehicle-mounted cameras scan passing plates against Ontario Ministry of Transportation and CPIC hotlists (suspended drivers, stolen vehicles, expired tags, outstanding warrants, missing persons); HPS states that non-hit scans are deleted without the officer being notified, while hit data is retained under MFIPPA. panopti.ca found no evidence of a fixed or stationary ALPR network in Hamilton, Ontario. (Widely reported fixed Flock Safety cameras and DeFlock protests concern Hamilton, Ohio — a different city.)
